Strength and Endurance

Why Strength Matters

Strength is your body’s ability to generate force — to lift, push, pull, and carry. Muscular endurance is your ability to keep doing those movements over and over without tiring. Together, they’re what let you get out of a chair, lift shopping bags, open jars, play with your kids or grandkids, and catch yourself if you stumble. Strength isn’t just about “muscles” — it’s directly linked to independence, confidence, and living life on your own terms.

How It Changes with Age

We naturally lose muscle mass and strength as we get older — a process called sarcopenia. This can start as early as our 30s and speeds up after 50. By the time people reach their 70s or 80s, they may have lost up to half their strength if they haven’t trained it. This loss doesn’t just make us weaker — it makes everyday tasks harder, slows recovery from illness, and increases the risk of falls and fractures.

Grip strength in particular is one of the clearest markers of this decline. Studies show that weaker grip strength is linked to higher risk of disability, hospitalisation, and even shorter lifespan. In fact, grip strength has been called a “vital sign” of aging because it reflects overall muscle health so well.

Why Acting Now Pays Off

The good news is strength is highly trainable, even in later life. Resistance training, bodyweight exercises, and activities that challenge your muscles can rebuild strength and slow down decline. The stronger you are now, the more reserve you build for the future. Think of it as “muscle in the bank” — a buffer that helps you keep doing the things you love for years longer.

Improving muscular endurance also means you’ll fatigue less quickly, so everyday tasks — gardening, walking, carrying shopping — feel easier and less draining.

What Your Results Mean

Your grip strength score today is more than just a number — it’s a snapshot of your current and future muscle health. A stronger grip means your muscles and nervous system are functioning like someone younger than your age, giving you a real advantage for health and independence. A lower result is not a failure — it’s an opportunity. Every bit of strength you build now adds to your reserve, protects your independence, and makes life easier in the long run.
