Cardiovascular Fitness

Why Cardiovascular Fitness Matters

Your cardiovascular fitness is a measure of how well your heart, lungs, and blood vessels deliver oxygen to your body when you move. Think of it as the engine that powers everything you do — from walking up the stairs to playing sport or even just carrying groceries. The stronger this system is, the easier everyday activities feel, and the lower your risk of serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In fact, research shows that cardiovascular fitness is one of the strongest predictors of how long and how well you will live.

How It Changes with Age

Cardiovascular fitness naturally declines as we get older. From our 30s onward, our “VOâ‚‚ max” (the maximum amount of oxygen our body can use) drops by about 10% per decade if we don’t train it. That means what once felt effortless — climbing hills, running for the bus, keeping up with the kids — starts to feel harder and harder. By the time people reach their 70s, those with low fitness often struggle with basic daily tasks and tire quickly. This decline is one of the main reasons people lose independence as they age.

Why Acting Now Pays Off

The good news is you can slow this decline — and even reverse some of it — through regular exercise. Building your cardiovascular fitness now creates a “reserve” that protects you in the future. Just like with balance, the fitter you are today, the more buffer you have against natural aging. People with higher fitness not only live longer, they live better: they have more energy, recover faster from illness or injury, and stay independent for much longer.

What Your Results Mean

Your cardiovascular score today is a powerful sign of your “functional age.” A higher score means your heart and lungs are working like someone years younger than your actual age — a huge advantage for your future health. A lower score is not a life sentence; it’s a clear signal that now is the time to act. Every improvement you make in fitness now will pay off in better energy, fewer health risks, and greater freedom later in life.
